Pock Connects Bitesize was back in action at the end of the summer term supporting current students with their career and university choices.
Jessica Pidgeon (05-16) came into school to talk to Lower Sixth student Cameron, who is exploring STEM career paths and university courses. While OP Millie Goode (17-19) connected via Teams with Fifth Form student Ruby to talk about physiotherapy.
Jessica completed a Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering at the University of Bath and currently works as a graduate process engineer at VPI Power in Immingham. She provided valuable insights into her career journey to date, covering graduate schemes, internships, her role at VPI, and involvement in the Humber Zero carbon capture project.
Jessica is also a committee member for the Energy Institute’s Young Professionals Network in the Humber Region and works with several schools in the area to promote STEM careers. She discussed with Cameron STEM-based career opportunities as well as giving useful tips on universities and university courses, and practical advice on how to add impact to a personal statement when applying for STEM degree courses.
Millie did a Master’s in Physiotherapy at the University of Bradford. Now fully qualified, she works as physiotherapist for the Calderdale and Huddersfield NHS Foundation Trust where she is currently on rotation with the Inpatient Acute Medicine Therapy Team. The Teams call gave Ruby the opportunity to learn more about the route to becoming a physiotherapist and to ask specific questions about what is involved.
Ruby said: “I am interested in doing physiotherapy and Mr Lambert thought it would be a good idea to set up a call with Millie. We spoke about what areas I was interested in and suggested some uni courses to look at which will really help me with my decision-making as I move into the Sixth Form.”
Millie commented: “Talking with Ruby was a pleasure, and I was delighted to share my experiences with her. It was also really exciting for me to see how much BTEC in Sport has progressed since I was a student at Pocklington.”
